Course Overview
Midwives are essential to healthcare, and their role is dedicated to supporting women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. To support the midwifery workforce and in accordance with NHSE recommendations, this course promotes the importance of restorative supervision through reflective practice, improved communication, and the creation of a safe environment that fosters peer support and collaboration.Throughout the course, you'll be taught the A-EQUIP model, critically analysing its role in midwifery practice and its potential to support governance and quality improvement initiatives. Entry Requirements
- This course is for registered midwives only.
- You must hold an active NMC registration.
- You must practice within a healthcare setting that provides NHS or NHS-commissioned services.
- You must provide evidence that you hold a level 6 certificate in education (for instance, BSc Hons in Midwifery) or above (as per standard 4.15 of The Frameworks for Higher Education Qualifications of UK Degree-Awarding Bodies.)
- Those without a level 6 certificate in education must provide evidence of prior learning; where approved, education institutes must support learners to attain the skills and knowledge to study at level 7 (or equivalent).
- Applications should be supported by a statement from your line manager, matron, or education lead.
- This course involves regulated activity so you must gain an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before starting your studies. Charges are payable to cover the cost of the DBS Enhanced Disclosure application and annual registration with the online Update Service. (Normally your sponsoring organisation will organise this.) Please note that your DBS must have been completed within three years of the course start date.
- You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.
- If English isn’t your first language, you’ll also need IELTS 7.0 with normally no less than 6.5 in any band (or equivalent). We also accept a range of other English language qualifications – please visit our English Language Requirements web page for more details.
- Please note that this course is subject to the University's Fitness to Practise procedure.

Teaching & Assessment
This course will be delivered using a variety of learning and teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, as well as online discussions and activities posted on the University’s virtual learning environment, Moodle. You’ll be expected to attend all scheduled sessions and prepare for these in advance by undertaking relevant research and background reading.
Formative assessment will support your learning, allowing you to reflect on feedback from your tutors and peers. It takes a variety of forms including the submission of samples of work and does not contribute to the final module mark. Summative assessment is designed to test your achievement of the intended learning outcomes of the course and includes a reflective portfolio and oral assessment.
